Team Spotlight Story

Five minutes with Scott

Scott McIntyre joins us this month to tell us more about his job as Kids Operating Room's Head of Design and Development, as well as his journey to becoming a part of our amazing team.

What is your role at KidsOR?
I am the Head of Design & Development at Kids OR. I oversee and engage with our partner hospitals to facilitate the implementation of projects from inception to completion. This involves initial site surveys, discussions with hospitals, report writing and proposing a schedule of works.

My team and I also draw up technical plans and 3D models to allow us to design the colourful artwork within these spaces to transform the environment. We tailor each space uniquely, drawing on inspiration from the local environment and culture, using native wildlife and landscape to transform the spaces for the children.

We are always developing something new and exciting to progress our approach and ethos in everything we do.

How did you find yourself working for KidsOR?
After 20 years in architecture, I was looking for a new challenge and could see the positive and life-changing impact KidsOR could have on so many children all over the world. With KidsOR being a new organisation, I felt that I was still young enough to bring some new creative ideas to the team backed by many years of experience in architecture.

Seeing the difference that can be made by providing the right tools and training and the smile on the families’ faces is a great incentive.

What’s your favourite part of the job?
Travel, meeting new people and seeing different cultures. Every day is different, and we always have a lot on so there is never a dull moment!

The pandemic has changed how we do certain aspects of our role, but it has allowed us to design new systems and procedures to help continue to deliver these projects. Also, my dog can come to work so she's able to enjoy being part of the team too!

Where & what did you study at University?
Originally from Glasgow, studied Architectural Design & Technology before moving to Duncan Of Jordanstone Art School to study Interior & Environmental design. Upon graduation I started in an award-winning architectural practice working on a variety of Healthcare, Licensed Leisure and Commercial projects.

Do you have any hidden talents?
My wife recently bought me pizza oven and I appear to have a hidden talent for making artisan pizza - who knew throwing flour around the kitchen could be so much fun! The Dundee team has already placed their order for the weekend, although some of the topping requests are debatable…..
