The road to 200: Kids Operating Room opens 101st theatre

News

Last Thursday marked a huge milestone for Kids Operating Room - and the beginning of an even bigger journey.

Earlier this week we were so proud to announce the opening of our 100th theatre. A landmark milestone, marking capacity for 200,000 operations each and every year in our facilities.

But - rather than spending too long celebrating, we're already on the march to installing the next 100. And this journey has already started.

We are so pleased to announce the official opening of our 101st paediatric operating room, based at Black Lion Hospital in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

This isn’t just “the next one.” It’s the first of the next 100.

After reaching our original goal of installing 100 operating rooms in low- and middle-income countries ahead of schedule, we set a bold new ambition: to double our impact by building another 100 theatres by 2030. Room 101 is where that future begins.

More than a milestone, this launch marks the start of a new chapter - one focused on reaching even more children, in even more countries, with the safe, timely surgery they urgently need.

Every operating room we install brings us closer to a world where no child is denied care simply because of where they were born. With each new space, we not only increase surgical capacity - we build local systems, train local teams, and help unlock the potential of thousands of children who would otherwise be left behind.

From 100 to 101 and beyond, our belief remains firm: Surgery isn’t a luxury. It’s a fundamental right.

And we’re just getting started.
