KidsOR unveil Paul Farmer Memorial Operating Room
Kids Operating Room are proud to announce the opening of an incredibly special new theatre; The Paul Farmer Memorial Paediatric Operating Room in Burare, Rwanda.
Our newest theatre is installed at the Butaro District Hospital, a facility developed in part by Dr. Farmer's Partners in Health organisation, and pays tribute to the incredible legacy left by Dr. Farmer.
Dr. Paul Farmer was a visionary in global health and a tireless advocate for the rights of those in poverty. He devoted his life to improving healthcare systems in resource-limited settings. His legacy of compassion, equity, and excellence continues to inspire healthcare professionals worldwide. The Paul Farmer Memorial Paediatric Operating Room stands as a tribute to his extraordinary contributions, ensuring that the children of Rwanda have access to the surgical care they need and deserve.
Garreth Wood, Co-Founder of KidsOR, said: "This operating room is a testament to the enduring legacy of Dr. Paul Farmer. His belief that every human being deserves quality healthcare, no matter where they live, has guided our work. We are honoured to contribute to his legacy by providing Rwandan children with access to the surgical care they need."
Despite progress thanks to the work of organisations like PiH, healthcare provision for children remains an issue in Rwanda, especially in the rural areas of the country. This new operating room is expected to serve thousands of children each year, providing life-saving surgeries that would otherwise be inaccessible.
The operating room at Butaro will not only serve as a place of healing for children, but also as a centre for training and education. By investing in the skills of local surgeons and healthcare workers, we help to build a sustainable future for paediatric surgery in Rwanda. We're incredibly grateful to a number of organisations for their collaboration on this project.
The partnership of Partners in Health, as well as the Rwandan Ministry of Health and the Scottish Government, has helped make this shared vision a reality and brought life-changing surgical resource to an area with great need. Kids Operating Room is committed to continuing its work in Rwanda and across Africa, ensuring that all children have the opportunity to grow up healthy and reach their full potential. The Paul Farmer Memorial Paediatric Operating Room is just the beginning of our long-term commitment to improving paediatric surgical care in the region.
