Our latest life-saving operating room...

News

We are so pleased to reveal that our newest life-saving paediatric operating room is officially open.

This new theatre, installed at the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital in Rivers, Nigeria, is the latest collaboration between Kids Operating Room and long-time partners Smile Train.

This state-of-the-art facility is our most recent achievement, creating a monumental improvement to children's healthcare in the region.

Powered by solar energy, this innovative theatre not only addresses the critical issue of unreliable power supply but also aligns with our commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Nigeria faces significant challenges in paediatric healthcare, with some of the highest child mortality rates in the world. In fact, it ranks second globally for under-5 mortality rates. Our mission is to bring safe, high-quality paediatric surgery to regions where it’s needed most. The new theatre at UITH, located in Nigeria's 7th largest city, is a vital step towards fulfilling this mission.

The installation of this solar-powered theatre is part of a larger initiative to transform healthcare infrastructure across Africa. These solar-powered theatres are designed to alleviate the inefficiencies and disruptions caused by power outages during surgeries, a common issue in many parts of Nigeria.
