Major Milestone for Children's Surgery in Mauritania
We are very excited to reveal the installation of a new operating room in Mauritania - bringing life-changing surgical care to the country's largest hospital; the Centre Hospitalier National in Nouakchott.
Our first ever project in the country, this theatre makes Mauritania the 33rd country across three continents to receive a state-of-the-art paediatric surgical theatre from Kids Operating Room.
Transforming Child Healthcare in Mauritania
Mauritania faces severe healthcare challenges, with an under-5 mortality rate more than 800% higher than the UK. Limited access to specialised surgical care means many families are left without options for their children. This new operating room will transform outcomes by enhancing child survival rates, reducing the need for costly overseas surgeries, and boosting local medical training.
A Collaborative Effort
This achievement was made possible thanks to our dedicated partners, including Smile Train, who share our commitment to improving paediatric surgical care in low- and middle-income countries.
Aligning with the Sustainable Development Goals
The installation of KidsOR’s first operating room in Mauritania directly supports several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being. By providing life-saving surgical care for children, this project improves health outcomes, reduces mortality rates, and addresses health inequities faced by vulnerable populations. It also supports SDG 4: Quality Education, as healthier children can attend school, and SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals, highlighting the power of collaboration between global organisations to drive sustainable change in healthcare systems.
Looking Ahead: A Brighter Future
The installation of this state-of-the-art facility marks a crucial step towards a stronger healthcare system in Mauritania. By providing local access to life-saving surgeries, this operating room will change countless lives, allowing children to grow up healthy and live the lives they deserve.
Together with our partners, we remain dedicated to ensuring every child has access to safe surgery, no matter where they are. This new theatre in Mauritania is not just a medical facility; it's a beacon of hope, a symbol of progress, and a promise of a better future for the country's children.
