A fruitful award season.

It’s been a season of celebration at Kids Operating Room - with recent award wins recognising not only our innovative approach to global surgery, but the people behind the progress.

Earlier this month, our organisation was awarded Best Health Equity Initiative at the 2025 Prix Galien Awards in London - an event that honours groundbreaking achievements in healthcare. We were recognised for our Solar Surgery System, a life-changing innovation that provides clean, reliable power to operating rooms in under-resourced hospitals around the world.

In many of the hospitals where we work, unreliable electricity has long posed a hidden but deadly risk. Power surges damage essential equipment. Blackouts delay or disrupt surgeries. Our solar-powered system changes that - keeping surgeries running safely and sustainably, no matter the conditions outside.

“There are so many barriers for children in low- and middle-income countries to receive the surgical care they need,” said Dr. Tatian Muwanga, Head of Advocacy. “This system ensures that reliable electricity is not one of them.”

Shortly after the Prix Galien win, we were thrilled to be recognised again - this time in the Health & Wellbeing category at the P.E.A awards ceremony celebrating impact-led innovation. Each award is a powerful reminder of what’s possible when bold ideas are backed by purpose, partnerships, and relentless belief in a better future for children.

And it wasn’t just our programmes being celebrated. Our co-founder, Garreth Wood MBE, was named Founder of the Year at Startups Magazine’s 2025 Hustle Awards — recognising his visionary leadership, hands-on commitment, and tireless work to expand access to safe surgery worldwide. Our Head of Corporate Partnerships, Jessica, did a fantastic job collecting the award on his behalf.

From solar-powered breakthroughs to personal recognition, this award season has been a humbling reminder of how far we’ve come — and how much more we can do.
